Soho London

Soho is a neighbourhood in the City of Westminster, London. The area has been an entertainment district since the 17th century. It is now also a major shopping district, known for its fashion and art galleries, as well as for its restaurants and nightlife. Soho is bounded by Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the west, Leicester Square to the south and Charing Cross Road to the east. The area covers approximately one square mile (2.6 km²).

The name "Soho" first appears in the 17th century. Most authorities believe that the name derives from a former hunting cry. The area was developed as a fashionable residential district by 1585, when it was laid out along with the adjacent St James parish around what is now Leicester Square. It became popular as a location for coffee-houses and taverns in the 1660s, and these gradually became replaced by theatres from the early 18th century onwards.

The first theatre on the street was the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which was established in 1663; it was demolished and rebuilt several times over the next 75 years. The street became known for its music halls in the mid-19th century, and later for its nightclubs, bars and brothels. The entertainment venues began to decline in the early 20th century, and the street became better known for its theatres, restaurants, and shops.
